Death Valley Nature Photography

This time of the year I always try to make it down to Death Valley.  Usually some wildflowers are blooming, clouds are rolling in over the mountains and most importantly, it is the only time of the year this desert is not unbearable.  Death Valley is such a surreal landscape that I recommend everyone make a trip there.  One of the few places left that man has not made its mark; Death Valley holds a unique array of landscapes and creatures…they just tend to be a bit harder to find.  Every time I’ve been, the desert offers something new that I’ve overlooked before, always making me want to go back for more.

Stephanie Suesan Smith, Ph.D. - Beautiful photographs. How close were you to the coyote? They are hard to photograph because they are so wary.

admin - Thanks Stephanie! We came across two of these guys traveling together by a stroke of luck. I had never been able to get so close to coyotes in the past. The two of them couldn’t be more different. One was very wary while the other was bold. While I was on a desolate road I saw the two of them in the distance so I slowed down to get a better look. As I slowed, they began to approach the car. The bold one circled in front of the car until I stopped. The one had obviously come accustomed to handouts and had developed this technique to stop the cars for a little snack. So he paused for a moment waiting for me to give him something as I stole this image, then annoyed with the lack reward wandered back off to the desert.

DW - Beautiful as always! Love the B&W.

dakoda - those pictures are amazing

Auburn State Recreation Area Wildflowers

One of my favorites spots for a quick nature get-a-way is Auburn State Recreation area.  It is good for a nice gentle walk or some strenuous hiking based on what trail you want to make your way down.  There is so many different nature opportunities in this area, I’m still discovering new things.

Right now under the Foresthill Bridge, wildflowers are beginning to bloom.  I saw about eight different varieties.  A recent discovery was this very unique flower that I’ve never seen before…kinda looks like an alien sticking its tongue out at you.  You be the judge! :)

Tom - The alien is in fact an “alien” – non-native Clasping Henbit (Lamium amplexicaule). It’s in the Mint family.

admin - Thanks Tom :) Curious looking little flowers, aren’t they!

Beth - Very pretty!

Wildflowers are blooming in Red Hills area.  This is a beautiful area, great for a nice hike…and the recent bloom just made things even better.  Right now Yellow Coreopsis, Red Maids, Poppies and a few other varieties that I couldn’t identify are in bloom.  I have a feeling that things are just starting so a bit later should be perfect.

Red Hills area is located just outside Chinese Camp in southern Gold Rush country and managed by the Bureau of Land Management.  Hope you enjoy the California wildflower images.

Over the weekend I had the chance to sneak away to Hope Valley to photograph the beautiful fall colors. If you have never been to Hope Valley (just south of Lake Tahoe), you have to take a day trip to check it out. Right now is just the tail end of the colorful part of the season so you will have to get there quick. Hope you enjoy the fall colors!

Directions:
From Sacramento – Take highway 50 East, take a right on highway 89 and when you hit highway 88, you’ve made it. You will have to explore around a bit but the intersection is the heart of the area.

Sunday I had the opportunity to get outside for a bit when there was a break in the clouds so I ventured up to Dave Moore Nature Area.  It is a beautiful trail that gently winds it way through the woodland and along the river.  I’ve been waiting for these wonderful little flowers called Fairy Lanterns and they’ve finally began to bloom.  You could walk by them and barely notice if you are not paying attention.  Not your conventional flower that draws you in with bold color and unusual design, the beauty of these flowers is hidden beneath three pedals.  When you look inside, you will find some unusual design that makes for some interesting photos.

Directions:
From Eastbound Interstate 80 – Take the Highway 49 exit heading south at the town of Auburn. Continue along Hwy 49 through the towns of Cool and Pilot Hill, approximately a 14 mile drive. The entrance will be 3 miles south of Pilot Hill on the right at the cobblestone wall.
